Bent classes are designed for writers, beginning to advanced. The low-impact, supportive environment encourages participants to take the risks necessary for their writing to grow. Classes are offered in poetry, fiction, memoir, performance, and more. ALL CLASSES CURRENTLY BEGIN ON THE FIRST WEEK OF THE MONTH and continue on a rolling basis (i.e. if you sign up for Thursday class, your first session will be the first Thursday if the coming month). Please email bent.writing@gmail.com with questions or for more information!
If you need financial assistance with tuition, please look at our sliding scale policy.
This class meets every Monday night, with each session beginning the first Monday of the month.
Ideal for writers and aspiring writers interested in different genres, our General Writing class explores the craft of writing from a broad perspective. In this class, you will read weekly assignments that will introduce you to new styles. In-class writing prompts, free-writes, and exercises will help you generate new material. Your classmates may be working on novels, writing screenplays, or experimenting with poetry. There is plenty of opportunity to share your work and get affirming feedback. Teachers Cecily Schuler and Cody Pherigo are full of heart and creative guidance for beginning and seasoned writers alike! This class is not ASL Interpreted.

Re-mything is about reclaiming the stories we're told. Rework classic and contemporary mythology to tell your own story. How have fairytales misrepresented romance and discovery? Who are our real-life protagonists and heroines? Re-mything is appropriate for storytellers, fiction writers, poets, and performers -- and those who are just beginning their journeys as creative writers. Teachers Imani Sims and Amber Flame are professional writers and performance artists who use myth to tell their own truer truths. This class is not ASL Interpreted.

Whether you are working up the confidence to try your first open mic or have been competing in poetry slams for years, this class will help you grow as a poet and a performer. Curriculum includes in-class analysis of performance poetry as it appears on video and on the page. You will write and revise poems for the stage, receiving frequent, supportive coaching from teachers who are experienced performers themselves. Discussions will explore the elements of compelling spoken word poems, with topics ranging from group poems to stage etiquette. Sign up & step into the spotlight! Teachers Cole Arden Peake and Finn Cottom are writers who take joy in the art of performing, and they can't wait to share the fun with you. This class is not ASL Interpreted.

This class is not ASL Interpreted at this time. This class meets every Tuesday night, with each session beginning the first Tuesday of the month.
Arguably the nerdiest course on our roster, on Tuesday night you are invited to discover the subtle and mysterious elements of a successful poem or a piece of prose on the page. Can a poem be loud, even if it never meets a microphone? Can a story whisper and still make an impact? What is a line-break? Can a sonnet be sexy? This class features a weekly opportunity for workshop-style in-depth feedback on the work of one student, as well as in-class and homework exercises including experiments in form and revision. Would you like to produce publishable works, ready for submission? Teachers Shae Savoy and Cody Pherigo are passionate about learning together in a dynamic classroom environment.
